Whilst we know that judging successful women on what they choose to wear on the red carpet is in no way helping advance society as whole, we couldn’t help but clap our hands in glee this past Sunday as the great and the good of Hollywood turned out in full force to celebrate the 87th Annual Academy Awards.
As ever, the Oscars gave us plenty of moments to swoon over, not least with the glittering array of options that sashayed through Los Angeles looking not too dissimilar to something we’d like to see hitting wedding aisles throughout the land! The big trend this year (apart from ladies in red, which, for the purpose of this post we’ve avoided as it’s a little predictable) was a whole host of lovely ladies in nude coloured gowns. From Best Actress nominee Felicity Jones in custom-made Alexander McQueen to Kerry Washington in a Miu Miu peplum number, we are all aquiver with the subtle toned possibilities for brides-to-be.
We also loved pretending we were choosing our bridesmaids outfits from amongst Hollywood’s leading ladies. Sienna Miller in Oscar de la Renta, Jessica Chastain wearing a Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci bespoke gown and Margot Robbie in Saint Lauren all made an exemplary case for why every bride ought to choose the sexiest dress she can find for her ‘maids! Never has it seemed more true that if you feel great wearing a gown, you’re automatically going to look great too. Confidence is key!
Some of our favourite numbers at the Oscars may seem a little quirky for weddings but we say to hell with that. Kat Dennings wore a stunning lace and beaded gown, our girl crush Emma Stone can do no wrong in Elie Saab and beautiful Olivia Munn rocked a velvet halterneck with aplomb. If your bridesmaids have a very definitive sense of personal style, it’s not fair to shoehorn them into identikit dresses, so have a think about these stylish, individual styles instead.
We’re not adverse to a little bit of monochrome in a wedding theme and think that a striking, graphic use of black and white can look really stunning amongst an entourage of bridesmaids. Here we see Zoe Saldana rocking Prabal Gurung, whilst Best Actress nominee Reese Witherspoon looked so damn classy, elegant and ladylike in a Tom Ford gown. Vertical or horizontal, this colour blocking just seems to work.
And finally we just want to give a little bit of column space to the safe but pretty numbers that we know any bridesmaid would be happy to wear. Pick an ice cream hue, add an intriguing neck line, sprinkle with a dash of glamour and ta-dah! You’ll have an entourage worthy of the A-list as you make your way up the aisle.
What were your favourites from the Oscars 2015? Which red carpet trends would you love to see making their way into bridal wear?
